Neuro-modulators: Botox® and Dysport®
Botox® and Dysport® are trade names for Botulinum Toxin. Botulinum Toxin is a neuromodulator created from the bacterium Clostridium Botulinum. Botox was first created to treat eye spasms and twitching by relaxing the muscles around the eyes. It was soon discovered that using this treatment also relaxed other facial muscles and minimized wrinkles around the eyes.
Botox® and Dysport® work by smoothing wrinkles and expression lines by reducing muscle contraction. They can also lift areas of the face by weakening muscles that work together to make facial expressions. Injections typically last three to four months depending on how your skin responds to the treatment and the area being injected. The injections are virtually painless and feel like nothing more than a tiny pinch. Treatments are safe and and you can resume normal activities immediately afterwards. You may experience slight swelling or redness which does not last long. Slight bruising can occur but this can be covered with the use of a mineral make-up concealer. You may also experience a slight headache after injections.
Botox® and Dysport® should not be used by anyone that has an allergy to Botulinum Toxin ingredients, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have any neurological disorders.
Forehead Wrinkles - Horizontal lines across the forehead that appear when you raise your eyebrows.
Forehead Lift - Your forehead can be lifted by injecting Botox® and Dysport® at the top of the hairline creating a subtle lift as well as smoothing and tightening the skin.
Glabella/Frown Lines - Glabella also called the 11-sign wrinkles or Angry Lines. They are the vertical lines that form from frowning or furrowing your brow.
Crows Feet - These are the lines around your eyes that are formed by laughing, smiling and squinting. Botox® and Dysport® injected into this muscle will weaken it smoothing lines and reducing the look of wrinkles.
Brow Lift/Eyebrow Shaping - Botox® and Dysport® can be used to help lift your brows instead of having a surgical procedure. A surgical brow lift can leave you looking continually surprised, Botox® and Dysport® will give a subtle lift to droopy brows and add an attractive arch to your brows.
Bunny Lines - These are the horizontal lines across the top of the nose that are formed by the alaeque nasi muscle when you scrunch up your nose.
Lips - Botox® and Dysport® can be injected to the area around the lip to soften the vertical lines caused by pursing the lips from smoking or making a kiss.
Gummy Smile - Botox® and Dysport® are injected to help improve the look of a “gummy smile” by reducing the movement of the upper lip, preventing the upper lip from retracting and exposing as much gum tissue when you smile.
Marionette Lines - These are the frown lines that stretch past the mouth and form the deep grooves on the sides of the cheeks. They are called marionette lines as they resemble the lines of a puppets mouth. These lines are caused by loss of facial volume and the depressor anguli oris muscle which causes creases as it is pulling downwards. Botox® and Dysport® relax this muscle which reduces the downward pull. Facial fillers such as Juvederm® can help replace the lost volume and fill in the deep creases.
Dimpled Chin - Constant flexing of the mentalis muscle can cause the chin to look bumpy and dimpled like that of an orange peel. Botox® and Dysport® injected into the muscle can smooth out the bumpy lines.
Jawline Contouring - Botox® and Dysport® can be injected along the jawline to make it look more defined and straight and can also help to reduce sagging.
Nefertiti Neck Lift - A sagging chin or small bands in your neck that change when you talk or make different facial expressions can be a concern for many people. The muscle in your neck called the platysma muscle stretches with age and begins to droop, the effect is worsened by contraction of this muscle. Botox® and Dysport® injected into the muscle will help the bands smooth out, relaxing the muscle causing the muscles at the back of your neck to to take over and pull the skin back.
B at the Top Medical Aesthetics uses Hyaluronic Acid Fillers to help provide volume and structure to the face. There are many different types of fillers that are available and used for different effects depending on the area of the face and what is trying to be achieved. Fillers can last from 6 months to up to 24 months and can be performed in one session or cumulative sessions for a more natural appearance until the desired result is achieved.
At B at the Top Medical Aesthetics the dermal filler product we use is Juvederm® by Allergan®. Juvederm® uses a unique crosslinking technology, called VYCROSS, that allows for longer-lasting results and better lift. When a facial filler is injected, it’s essential that it integrates with your own facial tissue to get natural-looking results. Each JUVEDERM® product serves its own unique purpose, whether it’s to smooth away wrinkles, restore volume for a gentle lifting effect or to reshape and redefine the lips. Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)
PRP or Platelet Rich Plasma is used to help renew and replenish cells. It is obtained by taking your own blood through a needle stick, spinning it down in a centrifuge to separate the red cells from the white cells, and using as much of the middle layer as possible that contains the platelet rich plasma. The plasma can then be applied topically during a microneedling/Collagen Pin procedure or injected similar to filler to stimulate cells from within. PRP can also be used as an injectable on the face to help restore volume and collagen formation. Other uses can occur on the scalp to help with hair growth, or into the joints to help with joint regeneration.
Microneedling can be used to help resurface the top layer of the skin. It helps smooth the skin and improve skin architecture. It helps new cells to become exposed to the surface and helps stimulate the skin's own collagen production. It can be used in conjunction with PRP to enhance new cell turnover and stimulation further providing a youthful glow. This treatment is advised one to two times per year
Collagen P.I.N. microneedling pen uses multiple needles that vertically pierce the skin and create thousands of micro-injuries. These micro-injuries initiate skin repair by stimulating growth factors that lead to the generation of collagen and elastin that promotes healing and the effect is rejuvenated skin.
This device is mainly used for face wrinkles, scars, stretch marks and facial lines. Using this on scars and stretch marks creates puncture holes in the scar tissue that initiates healing causing the damaged skin to be eliminated and replaced with new skin. For Wrinkles and face lines, the treatment will help the skin to produce collagen and elastin, causing the skin to thicken and also tighten leaving the skin looking youthful.

Deoxycholic Acid is a form of bile salt which helps to dissolve fat. Using multiple small injections into the fat layer below the surface of the skin, deoxycholic acid helps to breakdown fat and minimize fatty deposits. Product is injected using small needles either under the chin (Belkyra) or in the desired body area (Lipodissolve) to breakdown fat globules. Immediately after the procedure there will be swelling and tenderness for up to 4-6 weeks when the next treatment can be performed. A minimum of 2 treatments will be required to visualize results for the chin and more than 2 treatments are recommended for spot treatments on the body.
Belkyra & Deoxycholic Acid injections
Fullness under the chin affects both men and women. This submental fat can be influenced by genetics, weight gain and aging, unfortunately this fat can be resistant to diet and exercise on it’s own. Submental fullness often referred to as a “double chin”, is a common yet undertreated area of the body. Belkyra gets rid of this chin fat without surgery. Belkyra is both FDA and Health Canada approved non-surgical treatment that eliminates a double chin.
The active ingredient in BELKYRA is deoxycholic acid, a naturally-occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected into the fat beneath your chin, BELKYRA causes the destruction of fat cells. Once destroyed, the cells cannot store or accumulate fat. A consultation will be done to decide how many treatments you will need for maximum results. Once the desired aesthetic response is achieved with BELKYRA retreatment is not expected.
The treatment sessions of Belkyra typically last 15 to 30 minutes for injection time. During your treatment sessions BELKYRA will be injected directly into the fat under your chin using multiple subcutaneous injections. Many patients experience visible results in 2 to 4 treatment sessions and up to 6 treatments may be administered spaced no less than one month apart. The number of injections and the number of treatments is tailored specifically to the individual patients submental fat distribution and treatment goals.
The most common side effects of BELKYRA include: pain, bruising, swelling, numbness, redness, and areas of hardness in the treatment area.
Before receiving Belkyra injections let your practitioner know if you have had or plan on having surgery on your face, neck, chin; if you have had cosmetic treatments on your face, neck, chin; or have had or have medical conditions in or near the neck area; have had or have trouble swallowing; have bleeding problems; are pregnant or plan to become pregnant; are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed.
Tell your practitioner about all of the medicines you take, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements, especially if you take a medicine that prevents the clotting of your blood (antiplatelet or anticoagulant medicine).
Chemical Peels are a fast way to exfoliate and eliminate dead and damaged skin cells. They help skin products such as the Vivier Skin Care program work more efficiently and help to provide more fresh appearing skin.
The entire treatment takes less than 10 minutes and depending on the depth of the peel can have no downtime. During the procedure the face is cleansed, a peel that is best designed for your skin is applied. A tingling and possible burning sensation may occur lasting for 10 minutes. Your treatment is then complete and repeat peels are recommended every 3 months to keep the skin as fresh and clean as possible.
